Polson Higgs
Most recent work experience was 20 years at Polson Higgs, Business Advisors in Dunedin where I was IT Manager.
Under my management Polson Higgs was kept up-to-date with the rapid technological changes that have occurred over the years. We implemented many innovative solutions to develop and maintain the organisation as a leading edge accounting firm.
Migrations from Lotus Notes to in-house Microsoft Exchange then Microsoft Office 365 were significant email migration projects. The implementation of Citrix Xenapp thin-client technology brought private cloud to the firm in the early 00's and is still in use today. The implementation of electronic document management in Microsoft SharePoint including migration from network file shares in 2012/13 was also a major milestone for the firm. I particularly enjoyed implementing the voice recognition software, Dragon, which enabled the partners to dictate directly into Microsoft Outlook or Word without the need for any transcription. My last significant project at Polson Higgs was the implementation of DocuSign electronic document signing that resulting in significant cost savings in time and printing costs.
I was fortunate to work with a number of external clients, particularly those that outsourced their IT service and support to Polson Higgs. This broadened my wider IT and business experience by working in different industries including health, travel, heavy machinery, audio-visual, manufacturing, forestry, not-for-profit and various other industries and service organisations.
IT manager at Polson Higgs was definitely the highlight of my career to date, essentially built on the skills of people inside the firm (partners and staff) and outside the firm (customers, suppliers and connections) that helped me to do my job well and achieve great results for the firm.
Deloitte
A major break in my professional IT career was to be employed as an IT Consultant with Deloitte in the mid 1990's. Core duties included desktop support with a focus on helping staff using Microsoft Windows and Office applications. I authored manuals for Microsoft Word and Excel that we used to train staff and clients that I have continued to use since then. In my last year at Deloitte, I was lucky to receive the firm's support to study for and then pass the examinations required for my professional accounting (CA) qualification.
Otago University Accounting and Finance Department (A & F)
My first IT job was at Otago University spanned different roles in the A&F department starting with a fixed-term database administration role before progressing to the full-time in-house IT support role. First line support there provided great experience for me and the opportunity to work with some great people. Supporting visiting academics, particularly from the USA was very enjoyable. I was very fortunate to co-author a paper published in 1991 in The CPA Journal (USA) titled DOS:Disaster or Security with visiting academic Dr Duane Milano and honours student Craig McKay.
